How to Prepare Fiberglass Water Slides for International Shipment

2026-11-02
Preparing fiberglass water slides for international shipment requires meticulous planning, specialized packing materials, and strict adherence to maritime and customs regulations. Because these components are large, irregularly shaped, and prone to surface scratching or structural cracking under stress, a standard shipping approach will not suffice.
Here is the comprehensive step-by-step process to ensure they arrive safely at their destination:
1. Cleaning and Surface Protection
Before packing, the fiberglass parts must be completely clean and protected from abrasion.
Deep Clean: Wash all components to remove dust, mold-release agents, or residue. Any trapped debris can act like sandpaper during transit due to shipping vibrations.
Thorough Drying: Ensure every piece is 100% dry. Trapped moisture inside plastic wrapping can cause osmotic blistering (gelcoat damage) or mold during weeks at sea.
Apply Protective Film: Cover the high-gloss, inner sliding surfaces (the gelcoat) with a heavy-duty, UV-resistant adhesive protective film (similar to what is used on new cars or appliances).
2. Specialized Demounting and Stacking
Water slides consist of multiple curved flume pieces. Stacking them incorrectly can warp or crack the fiberglass.
Flume Nesting: Cradle-nest similar slide pieces together to save space, but never allow fiberglass-to-fiberglass contact.
Interleaving: Place thick polyethylene foam sheets, heavy-duty bubble wrap, or custom felt blankets between each nested layer to absorb shocks.
Support Cradles: Use custom-built wooden or steel cradles lined with rubber or foam to support the bottom-most piece, distributing the weight evenly across its structurally reinforced points rather than its fragile edges.
3. Heavy-Duty Crating and Securing
Because of their bulky and irregular shapes, standard boxes are useless. Water slides are typically shipped via Open Top Containers, Flat Racks, or standard 40ft High Cube Containers depending on their dimensions.
Custom Skeleton Crating: Enclose stacked sections in heavy-duty, ISPM 15-compliant (heat-treated) wooden skeleton crates. This prevents other cargo from crushing them and allows forklifts to move them safely.
Internal Tie-Downs: Secure the slide pieces inside the crate using heavy-duty ratchet straps or polyester webbing. Avoid metal chains directly against the fiberglass.
Shrink-Wrapping the Crate: Wrap the entire exterior of the wooden crate in marine-grade industrial shrink wrap. Add ventilation pockets to prevent condensation while allowing the cargo to breathe through shifting climates.
4. Containerization and Sea-Fastening
Once the crates are ready, they must be secured inside or on the shipping vessel.
Blocking and Bracing: Inside the shipping container, use thick timber to block and brace the crates so they cannot slide forward, backward, or sideways during rough sea transits.
Moisture Control: Toss large industrial desiccant bags (silica gel) inside the container to manage the "container rain" caused by extreme temperature fluctuations across international waters.
Weight Distribution: Ensure the heavy flanges and steel support brackets of the slide are positioned low in the container to maintain a low center of gravity.
5. International Compliance & Documentation
Failing to meet international shipping rules can result in heavy fines or your cargo being destroyed at the destination port.
ISPM 15 Certification: All wooden pallets, crates, and bracing material must be heat-treated and stamped to prove they are free of pests.
Accurate HS Codes: Use the correct Harmonized System (HS) code for customs declaration (typically under HS Code 9506 for roundabouts, swings, shooting galleries and other fairground amusements, which includes water park equipment).
Detailed Packing List: Clearly document the contents of each container, including part numbers for flumes, steel supports, bolts, and pumps to smooth out the customs clearance process.
